On this Focus on the Family broadcast, author Gary Thomas discusses the need to move away from selfishness in marriage by instilling a spiritual purpose and power into the relationship. He describes how he came to the realization that he got married for entirely selfish reasons – wanting his wife, Lisa, to love him well and meet all of his needs. He says couples who do that are like "spider spouses" who do everything for their own gratification.
Gary continues the discussion by urging couples to view their spouse as God's child and remember that God is the 'father-in-law.' Gary also recommends couples have a higher purpose or goal for their relationship, and he closes with a wonderful analogy about considering what the 'last day' of your marriage will be and then building into your relationship now to reach that legacy.
