Dr. Miles Mettler initially thought that his job was to instruct his children, but he came to realize that he needed to take ownership of his own mistakes before expecting his kids to abide by his expectations. So he began asking his children for feedback on how he was doing as a parent. He also recognized the importance of looking for the good his kids were doing, rather than focusing on the negatives. Dr. Mettler recommends parents "ask for permission" to talk to their kids, rather than barging in and interrupting what they're doing. This models respect and how parents want their kids to approach them, too. He also suggests parents think intentionally about not saying "no" to every request of their child. Listen in to this Focus on the Family broadcast as Dr. Mettler covers these topics and more in a discussion based on his book 52 Parenting Principles: How to Bring Out the Best in Your Kids.
