Dr. Miles Mettler initially thought that his job was to instruct his children, but he came to realize that he needed to take ownership of his own mistakes before expecting his kids to abide by his expectations. So he began asking his children for feedback on how he was doing as a parent. He also recognized the importance of looking for the good his kids were doing, rather than focusing on the negatives. Dr. Mettler recommends parents "ask for permission" to talk to their kids, rather than barging in and interrupting what they're doing.
